Section 89. Priekule – Kalvene.

In nature reserve “Blažģa ezers” (“Blažģa lake”), there takes place reintroduction (restoration in nature) of the European tree frog (Hyla arborea). This species of amphibian is common in southern Europe, but in Latvia it was considered extinct from the late 19th century.  In 1988, the Riga ZOO started a project, releasing more than 4,000 little frogs into the wild in five years. In May, when spawning occurs, the sound of tree frogs can be heard in the vicinity of ponds and lakes. Its song is reminiscent of a duck quacking or cackling. The frogs themselves are not worth looking for and it does not need to be done, because the species is protected. Besides, this amphibian masquerade greatly. If you hear the song of the tree frog, please let it know www.dabasdati.lv! Old mixed deciduous forests and other protected habitats can be found in the vicinity of Blažģa lake. In the nature reserves, making campfires and putting up tents is allowed only in places designated and equipped for that purpose.
