Section 90. Kalvene – Aizpute.
The Bojas park, which has developed around the Bojas manor (the main building now houses the South Kurzeme region's customer centre of the “Latvian State Forests”) is notable for the plantations of European Silver Fir (Abies alba). This species has been introduced into Latvia (propagated from elsewhere) and is not present in the wild. There are about half a hundred different species of white firs (Abies) in the world and they are found in the temperate and subtropical zone of the northern hemisphere. European wild white firs grow in the south of Latvia, therefore the relatively mild climate of Kurzeme Bojas is more suitable for them. It turns out that the popular Christmas song “O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum” in Germany actually lauds the European white fir, not our ordinary spruce.
