This church was built between 1900 and 1903 in the Byzantine style, and was meant for the local military garrison. The church, which was built to honour St Nicholas, patron saint of all seamen, and it was consecrated in the presence of Tsar Nicholas II. The ornate building was sacked by the Germans during World War I. During Latvia’s period of independence, the cathedral was used by the local military garrison. The Soviet military, in turn, turned into a sports hall, a cinema for sailors, and a warehouse. There are stories to say that Soviet soldiers broke off bits of the golden mosaic of the icons in the church. The building has now been returned to an Orthodox congregation. The builders of the cathedral used a unique way of pouring cement, which is why there are no supporting columns in the church. Instead, its weight is bolstered by its walls, with four arched vaults supporting them. It is the tallest Orthodox cathedral in Latvia at this time.

Lake Liepāja and the surrounding meadows are part of the "Lake Liepāja" nature reserve, and it is a Natura 2000 protected area of European significance for its importance as a nesting and migration stop for waterfowl. The lake hosts 27 nesting, 10 wintering, and 50 protected bird species that feed here during migration. Lake Liepāja is listed as an Important Bird Area in Europe (IBA). Horse Island features a walking trail with wooden boardwalks, two viewing platforms over the lake, and a birdwatching tower. The trail is enhanced with plantings, outdoor gym equipment, and designated rest areas. The birdwatching tower is located on an embankment that was originally constructed using steelmaking waste, known as slag. Horse Island is also home to the Nature House, an environmental and nature education centre where visitors can learn about environmental science - biology, ecology, zoology, and other nature-related fields. Two skating tracks have been created for recreational activities. Birds observed hereIn total, more than 100 bird species have been observed on Lake Liepāja. The most common include mute and whooper swans, various species of duck, herons, cormorants and birds of prey such as ospreys, goshawks and sparrowhawks. In Lake Liepāja, you can also observe specially protected species such as white-tailed eagle, black tern, Montagu's harrier, ruff, little crake and others.

The Southern Breakwater lies north of Liepāja’s central beach and plays an important role in protecting Liepāja's port. The Baltic Sea along the coast of Liepāja rarely freezes over, making the Southern Breakwater a great place for bird watching in winter, as waterfowl tend to concentrate there. The Southern Breakwater is accessible by walking along the beach, located approximately 800 meters from the parking lot at the end of Roņu Street. Birds observed hereA colony of great cormorants has formed at the end of the Southern Breakwater near the sea gate. Rare wintering bird species such as the oystercatcher and the rock pipit have been spotted near the breakwater.

At the end of Lauku Street, a 500-meter-long boardwalk leads to a birdwatching tower offering views of the lake and adjacent meadows.

The Maiļrags Spit is one of the areas bordering Lake Liepāja where a wide variety of bird species can be observed. Both waterfowl and birds that live and nest in the meadows can be seen here. Birds observed hereEurasian coots, common pochards, tufted ducks, and northern shovelers breed near the Maiļrags. During spring migration, Caspian terns, little gulls, corn bunting, lesser black-backed gulls, black terns, and red-crested pochards can be observed here.
