Järvselja is home to Estonia's oldest forest conservation area, the so-called "primeval forest quarter" (under protection since 1924). Several generations of Estonian forest scientists and forest managers have gained knowledge and practice in the surrounding forests. Forestry tests and research are still ongoing in Järvselja. The forests here are of different types due to different soil moisture.
