Section 100. Bigauņciems – Dubulti.
Shells of four species of mussels living in the Baltic Sea can be found on the Latvian coast. Most often you will spot the Baltic macoma, whose 1–2 cm long shell can be pink, grey, bluish or almost white. The largest is the sand gaper – it is 4 to 6 cm long and is more often white or grey. The light shell of the common cockle (about 2 cm long) is striped, and therefore easy to spot on the ground. The fan-shaped shell of the blue mussel is 2–3 cm long; it is black/blue on the outside and pearl white inside.
