Bird watching at the Liepāja Southern breakwater

Worth seeingBird watching at the Liepāja Southern breakwater

The Southern Breakwater lies north of Liepāja’s central beach and plays an important role in protecting Liepāja's port. The Baltic Sea along the coast of Liepāja rarely freezes over, making the Southern Breakwater a great place for bird watching in winter, as waterfowl tend to concentrate there.

The Southern Breakwater is accessible by walking along the beach, located approximately 800 meters from the parking lot at the end of Roņu Street.

Birds observed here

A colony of great cormorants has formed at the end of the Southern Breakwater near the sea gate. Rare wintering bird species such as the oystercatcher and the rock pipit have been spotted near the breakwater.
