SEEPatare Sea Fortress (Patarei merekindlus)

You can observe European architectural heritage - a fortification in Classicism style - only from the outside.
The Patarei Sea Fortress in Tallinn, built in the nineteenth century, is a gem of the Baltic Sea region – a Classical defensive structure that has is still fully standing. This is a memorial to the victims of communism and Nazism, as well as a meaningful symbol of resistance on the part of martyrs of the Republic of Estonia. The building has been used as an artillery battery, barracks, and prison. It is part of Europe’s architectural heritage.  The exhibition area ‘Communism is prison’, introducing the ideology and crimes of communism and the history of the building, is open in Patarei prison. The exhibition area covers nearly 1,200 square metres in the eastern wing of the prison, where you can see the original interior and prison yard.
