Purtse Hiiemägi (Grove Hill), sacrificial linden tree and sacrificial stonePurtse forest hill is the highest point in the area, and is thought to have been a sacred place for ancient Estonians. A ‘memorial park for victims of evil’ was established on the hill in 1991, when an oak tree was planted on the 50th anniversary of the 1941 deportations. Today the park is full of oak trees, planted by county and government representatives and members of various organisations, as well as by former Estonian presidents Lennart Meri and Arnold Rüütel.
Did you know…?
*The park features an Estonian ‘map of pain’ – the lawn has a map of the country marking the number of people who were deported in every county.
